What is the MDSAS Burns referral service?
The MDSAS Burns referral service revolutionises the referral and admission of both minor and major injuries from hospitals and other secondary healthcare centres to specialist burns centres across England and Wales. The service makes use of innovative new technologies with simple, easy to use functionality to ensure a referral can be made in minutes. Thanks to the innovative way that wound images can be attached to the referral information, burns centres can triage patients to accept the referral, provide guidance back to the referrer for local treatment, or refer on to another service, such as plastics or major trauma. Introduction of the new referral service has resulted in an immediate 60% reduction in admissions.
How does the service work?
Any clinician on a computer connected to the NHS N3 network can make a new referral through the browser-based referral software, by visiting mdsas.referrals.com and following a few simple steps. To create a referral record you need to enter: –
- Your contact details, for confirmation and follow up
- The burns centre you are referring to
- Details of the injury on the proforma template
- And then click to submit.
What about the images, to help patient triage?
As soon as you click submit, the referral software generates an encrypted QR code, unique to that patient and that referral. To attach images to the referral MDSAS have built a free app (SiD – Secure Image Download) for both Apple and Android phones. The app is launched from your own smartphone, or a trust-owned phone/tablet. Once you have scanned the QR code using the app, your device’s camera is activated and you can take a picture of the burn. When you are happy with the image, you simply click send and it is sent securely and attached to the patient referral record on the NHS N3 network. You can repeat the process to attach multiple individual images.
Isn’t that a security or information governance risk?
Not at all! Because the image is captured and processed through our secure, encrypted app, it is never stored in memory on your device. No patient identifiable information is ever requested or displayed and all the referral and image details are stored securely on the NHS N3 network. The app meets the Information Governance requirements and has been certified for use by NHS hospitals.
What have been the outcomes to date?
The system is operational in Greater Manchester, with burns being referred through to Manchester Foundation Trust (adult and paediatric) burns centres from 21 hospitals. Over the last 6 months, the number of admissions into the burns service was reduced by over 60%, with those cases largely managed through advice and guidance.
Are there any other referral services available from MDSAS?
MDSAS have a range of referral modules, all available through their referral platform (ERIC).
The modules cover referrals from GPs to secondary care, between secondary care services and referrals on to other specialists. As well as burns, existing services covered include spinal cord injuries, skin lesions/dermatology, vascular and plastic surgery. Additional services are being added continually.
